MUTINY DESCENDANT
NOW MUNITION WORKERS (Air Mail) SYDNEY, Apl. 27. Mrs E. Mapletoft, of Sydney, who is a direct descendant of Fletcher Christian, leader of the Bounty mutiny, is working in a New South Wales munition factory, after having escaped from the Solomons when the Japanese were only 75 miles away. Mrs Mapletoft said that her grandfather came from .Pitcairn Island, and his branch of the family had settled at Norfolk Island.
“My husband and I were at Faisi Island in the Solomons when Japan declared war,” she said. “We heard the Japanese had landed at Kiet Island. 75 miles away. Eleven of us took a small boat and escaped to Australia. The only man who knew anything about navigation was too ill to be of much use. He died the day we reached Australia.”
Mrs Maplatoft has been making munitions for six months. Her husband is in the R.A.A.F.- “ I feel I’m doing my bit to drive out the Japanese by working here,” she said.
