AFTER THE WAR
SQUARE DEAL FOR WORKERS LONDON. Apl. 28. Mr Peter Henderson, in his presidential address to the Scottish Trades Union Congress, declared: “If the people are to be protected' from the Nazis in our midst, we must demonstrate to the Government and to the employers that the workers must have a square deal after the war. We must emphatically make clear that we shall not tolerate the treatment to which the people were subjected after the last war. The vicious system of cutting down wages and of an army of unemployed in a country of potential wealth and abundance represents a tragedy and a crime that cannot be repeated when the next peace is secured. , „ Mr Henderson regretted the Governernment’s hesitant attitude to the Beveridge Report, and added: “We are forced to the conclusion that the big financial interests have again influenced the Government at the expense of the common people. We hope the Government will realise that the people will not treat lightly any attempt to evade the report’s principles."
