LABOUR AND THE PRESS
SPACE TO EXPRESS VIEWS (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Apl. 29. Remits dealing with defence, peace, and war, the freedom of speech and publicity, were the final matters dealt with by the annual conference of the Labour Party, which concluded tonight. Several remits were considered dealing with publicity. These urged—(l) That the press be compelled to reserve space for Government statements; (2) that Labour representation committees appoint a committee to reply to local propaganda in the press: (3) that members of Parliament be allowed to prepare daily summaries of their speeches for transmission by the Press Association. The following recommendations were approved:—(l) That as the newspapers are privately owned and this remit could not be legally enforced, the Government adopt other means at its disposal to obtain the necessary space; (2) endorsed: (3) that the matter be left to the members of Parliament, the Labour Party to make its own arrangements. The conference concluded with resolutions of appreciation to members of the fighting forces, the Prime Minister, the Cabinet, members of the Parliamentary Labour Party, the national president, the national secretary and staff, the national executive, and the conference officers.
