THE SPEED LIMIT

‘REDUCTION IN AUSTRALIA

SYDNEY, Apl. 21. Under the amended National Security Regulations, a speed limit of 30 miles an hour for all motor vehicles in Australia became law to-day. Charges against drivers for exceeding this limit will not now be an ordinary traffic law matter, but will be dealt with under the Natonal Security Regulations. These permit penalties up to a fine of £IOO, or six months’ imprisonment. or both. The aim in slowing down motor traffic is to conserve the rubber supplies. Some months ago the speed limit had been fixed at 40 miles an hour.
