AMERICAN AIR FORCE

THE ARMY SQUADRONS HIGH COMMAND REORGANISED WASHINGTON, (Rec. 0.15 a.m.) Mar. 28. The War Department announced the re-organisation of the Army Air Forces high command, reducing the major divisions of the air staff from 19 to 6. The changes, which are described as “ not a shake up, but streamlining to expedite action,” are designed to release headquarters from detailed work in order to concentrate on policy matters, to give field commanders greater responsibility and to reduce the Washington personnel. Lieutenant-general Henry Arnold remains commander of the air forces, and Major-general George Strathmeyer, chief of the air staff. Three deputy chiefs are Brigadier-general Laverne Saunders, who was a fighter pilot in the South Pacific before his recall. Brigadier-general T. J. Hanley, and Colonel William Hall. A new department of “ official and special projects,” is created under Colonel Trubee Davison.
