GERMAN REPRISALS

THREAT TO AMERICA SYDNEY, Mar. 12. There is no doubt tjiat German engineers have designed and built a plane capable of flying from France to America and back, says a Washington correspondent of the Sydney Sun. This was stated, the correspondent reports, by one United States Army Air Force officer discussing the possibility of Nazi bombing raids on the east coast of America in reprisal for raids on Germany. It is considered much more likely, however, that if the Germans seriously contemplated bombing Washington, New York, or Boston, they would use medium bombers from a carrier lying off the coast. These planes might crashland after dropping their bombs, or even try to get back to the carrier. Heavy bombers from the Continent could make a one-w#y trip and then land, the crews surrendering as prisoners. The weight of the fuel required, however, would preclude heavy bomb loads. A Canadian Air Force officer stationed in Washington said an attack on San Francisco or Los Angeles by the Japanese was more likely. A Japanese carrier might sneak in at dawn, loose its planes, and then head seaward, leaving the bombers to their fate. This would be a suicide mission, of which the Japanese were capable.
