DUNEDIN OPERATIC SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Dunedin Operatic and Dramatic Society was held in Mr E. S. Wilson's board room last night, when Mr R. White presided over a good attendance of members. The chairman, moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, said it was regretted that for various reasons it had not been found possible to stage a production during the past year. Members of the society had, however, assisted in Mr Stan Lawson’s production of “ Eight Sharp," which had been arranged for patriotic purposes and had proved very successful. From the balance sheet it would be seen the society’s funds had been conserved, and every expense possible had been avoided. He hoped in the not distant future that the war situation would have cleared and the society would again be in a position to resume its activities. He felt sure that both the performers and the public would be pleased to see the society again functioning. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: President, Mr J. McDonald: vice-presidents—Messrs S. Whyte, W. R. Olsen, and R. Herbert: committee—Miss Gwenda Burt. Messrs W. Sinton and R. White; secretary and treasurer, Mr E. S. Wilson; honorary auditor, Mr D. M. Spedding.

A discussion took place on the advisability of putting on a production during the coming year, and it was left to the incoming committee to make inquiries a 3 to the type of performance that would be available and to ascertain the possibilities of casting the show. It was suggested that a special meeting of all the members should be called, when the full particulars could be placed before them. The chairman reported that 70 of the society’s members were now on active service, and that several had made the supreme sacrifice. It was decided to send greetings and a report of the annual meeting to the members overseas. It was suggested that members should continue to keep up their subscriptions and endeavour to do all they could to maintain the activities of the society so that it might be in a flourishing position when the men returned home. .
