RICCARTON NOTES
(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 28. Three yearlings bought at Trentham will go into M. J. Wadley’s stable. The first of them is the Defaulter colt, for which Mr H. D. Greenwood paid 675 guineas. He is a half-brother to Nightbeain, lfis dam being Lady Burleigh, by Paladin— Tormentor, by Martian from the imported Torquato. Mr D. W. J. Gould will race the Defoe colt, for which 140 guineas was paid. His dam is Tipperary Girl, by Paper Money—Zora, by Catmint— Verintia, and back to Steppe, The Vermeer filly knocked down to’F. A. Roberts for 180 guineas was bought for Mrs L. Coulter, a new owner. The dam of this filly is Lalla Quex, by Lord Quex —Lalla Rookh, by Feramorz—Class, the same family as Wakeful and Noctuifonn. C. B. Dawson will train the colt that Mr C. C. Davis bought for 560 guineas. He is by Foxbridge (from Grey Eagle, an imported mare by the French sire Grey Fox 11, by Le Samaritain. J. Pankhurst secured a colt by Ninth Duke (son of Blandford) for 50 guineas. His dam, Fascinator, by Nightmarch from Charmilla, is a half-sister to Charmeuse, winner of the Great Easter Handicap. John Gay has been resting since he came home from Trentham. He may go north again in March, after which it is proposed to give him a good spell. He has been a consistent performer, as in 10 starts he has been only twice further back than fourth.
T. P. Jennings is preparing Roman Son and Gay Parade for a trip to the West Coast next month, while Snow Elf and Show Girl will be ready to race at Motukarara.
