THE PUBLIC DEBT
Sir, —Reviewing recent economic trends the Minister of Supply said, amongst other things, that at March 31, 1942, our public debt in London was less by £3,000,000 than it was at the same date in 1939. I think Mr Sullivan would have been more honest and truthful if he had said that, although our Government had pledged itself not to borrow overseas, or burden the soldier on. his return with heavy taxation through borrowing, statistics show that our national debt had increased from £282,000,000 in 1935 to £406,000,000 in March, 1941, and has gone on increasing ever since. If the Minister of Supply were not affected by a delusion, then we would be in the happy position of having passed through three years and a-half of a world war, showing not an increase, but a decided decrease in our national debt, and a substantial rise of some £32,000,000 in our London funds as well. Such dope coming from a responsible Minister can only bring discredit upon the party he represehts.— I am, etc., Matilda.
