RECEPTION AT CROMWELL
(Special) CROMWELL. Jan. 28. The Governor-General and Lady Newall paid their first visit to Cromwell in fine weather, arriving at 2.30 p.m. The ceremony of welcome commenced at 3 o’clock, when formal greetings were extended by the Mayor. (Mr J. C. Parcell), after which followed an inspection of the guard of honour, under the command of Captain W. W. Webb. Their Excellencies, accompanied by the Mayor and Mayoress, occupied the dais at the Soldiers’ Memorial, from which the address of welcome was extended. In his reply the Governor-General expressed his pleasure at meeting so many people, and said he hoped that on some future occasion an opportunity might be found to spend a longer period among the mountains and rivers. Following the ceremony, their Excellencies met a number of old residents of the district and inspected a parade of local Girl Guides, under the leadership of Miss I. Scott. The vice-regal party was entertained at afternoon tea prior to leaving for the Cromwell Hospital at 4.40 p.m. After this visit they left for Wanaka.
