HARVESTING WORK

CO-OPERATION OF ARMY It is proposed that the scheme under which army units will undertake harvesting work for farmers in Otago and Southland should be operated by a supervising committee of representatives of the Farmers' Union, the Primary Production Council, the Department of Agriculture, and the National Service Department, with a liaison officer from the army. . The additional labour that will be required for harvesting will be provided by the army. Camps will be established in country districts where they are required, and the men will be made available to the farmers according to the demand. The men will be fed by the army, and will be under its control. A hot breakfast will be provided in the camp, dry rations at mid-day, and a hot dinner at the camp in the evening. The army units which will be made available in Otago and Southland will be relieved periodically. From these units men who have had farming experience will be selected to supervise the work. A conference is to be held this week at which it is proposed to appoint a supervising committee.
