GAOL FOR CONSPIRACY

AUSTRALIANS SENTENCED FALSE MEDICAL REPORTS (Rec. 1 a.m.) MELBOURNE. Dec. 16. Dr Loyal Alan Downes, aged 41, and two other men were sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment for conspiracy. They were charged with having entered into an arrangement to have men eligible for military service declared medically unfit by Downes, who was an army medical examiner, upon payment of a consideration. A medical report before the court concerning Downes said he was unable to resist temptations of this nature because of over-indulgence in'alcohol.
