ADDINGTON MARKET
IMPROVEMENT IN VALUES (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH. Dec. 16 Larger entries of fat stock met with an improved market at to-day's sale at Addington, with the exception of secondary fat ewes, which were 5s a head lower. Store Sheep.—The entry totalled 3216, mostly hill-bred wethers. With the abnormal growth of feed throughout the country, competition for all classes was very keen, and every pen sold under the hammer at prices slightly in advance of recent rates. A feature of the yarding was a line of about 2000 wethers from Marlborough. This included 736 tvvotooths, which sold from 16s 6d to 17s 6d. The best price for older sheep was 19s 6d for a line of 372, and others made from 18s 3d to 245. Woolly ewes and lambs made from 12s 3d to 16s (all counted). The first offering of store lambs for the season sold well at 17s Bd. Fat Sheep.—An entry of about 4000, against 3300 last week. Again there were large numbers of unfinished ewes. Wethers were in short supply, and the few pons of attractive sheep offered were eagerly sought after by the trade at prices up to recent values. The market was firm in the early and middle stages, but except for good-quality sheep prices towards the close showed a drop of from 4s to 5s a head. The highest price for wethers was 42s 4d. and for ewes 30s 7d. Fat Cattle,—An entry of 451 head. The market showed little change early in the auction, but hardened later. Best steers brought fully 10s a head more than last week, while values for others were firm. Best beef sold from 47s 6d to 50s per 1001 b, medium to good 44s to 475, ordinary 38s to 41s and inferior down to 32s 6d. Fat Pigs.—The porker section was slightly smaller than last week and with butchers buying for the Christmas trade competition was spirited from the outset. The average price per lb was 7Jd to 9d. In the bacon section the demand showed no change, and values remained at last week's parity. The average price per lb was 6Jd to 7jjd.
