HALL OF MEMORIES

NO GROUNDS FOR CRITICISM The criticism regarding the maintenance of the Hall of Memories at the Waitaki Boys' High School expressed at a recent meeting of the Hall of Memories Committee with the executive of the Waitaki Old Boys' Association was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Waitaki High Schools' Board. Captain R. H. Hill said it was unfortunate that the full position had not been clarified at the conference between the committee and the Old Boys' Association. There had been some discussion and criticism as to what should go into the hall, but that had been left to Mr Milner by the Board of Governors. The committee should have referred the matter to the Board of Governors in the first place. Anything that had been done was done with the best of intentions, and it was unfortunate that certain statements had given a wrong impression. Mr Hill read a report made by the Hall of Memories Committee to the Old Boys' Association since the discussion between the two bodies. The report stated that the building generally was in a good state of tstxtntt^nmmttnittstntmtnititttmxtttn

preservation and repair, its condition reflecting the care taken of it and the pride taken in it by those most concerned. The matter of having flags displayed in the hall had been discussed, and it was unanimously decided that they added to the beautv' of the building and were in keeping with its purpose. The displaying of photographs, pictures, and other articles in the hall was debated, but the committee had no recommendation to make. A report on the building bv the board's architect (Mr W. I. Steenson) was read by the secretary (Mr D. V. G. Smith), and also disclosed that the building was in excellent condition. Repair work at the school was being carried out when the stonemason employed was diverted by the authorities to defence .and other essential work, otherwise it would have been finished. _ „ , ~ The chairman (Major H. S. Orbell) stated that the report was a very satisfactory one, being a complete answer to the criticism regarding maintenance, and after a brief discussion the board passed no to other business.
