PORT CHALMERS

SPECIAL MEETING OF COUNCIL A special meeting of the Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening and was attended by the Mayor (Mr H. S. Watson), and Crs L. Broomfield, A. Cassle, W.

Campbell, T. Harrison, and W. Leftwich. The difficulty of securing a staff to replace those serving in the forces was discussed, and it was decided that the position of acting-sexton be advertised, and that the Man-power Committee be appi cached for assistance. The question of the dog nuisance in the borough was again introduced in a letter from the Port Chalmers Swimming Club, which complained of the uncontrolled roaming of dogs on the swimming beach. The dogs were causing annoyance to swimmers and bystanders, and were a danger to younger children.—The council decided to erect notices requesting owners io keep dogs on the leash in the vicinity of the swimming area, more especially during the warmer season. A deputation from the Port Chalmers Marine Band, and a letter from the Harmonica Band, were received concerning the closing to the bands of Johnston’s Buildings.—After some discussion, it was decided to accede to the requests of the bands to be allowed to make suitable renovations provided these were carried out in collaboration with the borough engineer. and that the bands indemnified the council from accident. It was decided that the Golf Club be approached for the use of the mower for tidying the streets, and that a clean-up day be held on Friday.

BOYS’ BRIGADE A large gathering of parents and friends attended the ninth annual Inspection and display of the 17th Dunedin Company of the Boys’ Brigade. The inspection was judged by Lieutenant J. McKnight, of the New Zealand Forces, who spoke of the surprisingly high standard of work of the boys. He reminded the boys that this training would help them to become fit and efficient citizens. Mr W. J. Johnston, who presided, thanked the inspecting officer, and complimented Captain G. Knewstubb on the standard of efficiency of the company. He also welcomed officers and boys from the Dunedin companies, and thanked all who had assisted during the year. The programme by the lads was varied and interesting. The Dodds Cup, awarded for the best sectional work of the year, was presented by Mrs N. Dodds to No. 1 section, under Lance-corporal W. Leftwich. The other awards were presented by Mrs Simpson.
