ALE AND STOUT
RECORD PRODUCTION LAST YEAR For the year 1941-42 a total of 19,831.318 gallons of ale and stout'was produced in Now Zealand. This was an increase of 711.077 gallons, or 4 per cent., over the record high level of 19,120.241 gallons in the previous year, states the Abstract of Statistics for September. Though the average number of persons employed in the malting and brewing industry remained practically stationary, an increase of 7 per cent, was recorded for the salaries and wages paid in 1941-42 as compared with 1940-41. Of the materials used, sugar increased by 22 per cent, in quantity. Details of the materials used, with those for the previous year in parentheses. were as follows:—Barley used for malt, 828.480 bushels (762,819): malt purchased, 529,498 bushels (490,706); hops, 6174 cwt (6125); sugar, 51,714 cwt (42,281); total cost, of materials, £1.199.355 (£1.052,410). Other interesting statistics, with those for. the previous year in parentheses. were as follows;—Establishments, 48 (46); persons engaged, 1228 (1219); value of products. £2,264,698 (£2,118,030). The figure for value of products does not include the record figure of £1,953,448 for beer duty. Of the gallonage brewed, the amount of ale at 18,788,295 was 790,983 gallons more than for the 1940-41 period. Stout, at a total gallonage last year of 1,043,023, was 7 per cent, lower than for the previous year. Overtime worked in breweries and malthouses during 1941-42 aggregated 147,612 hours, against 137,130 the previous year.
