Nevertheless, he led at great speed' until weakening a furlong from home. Josedale Grattan made an effort, and got up fairly handy about six furlongs from home, but commenced to weaken at the half-mile post. Haughty put ijp a great performance to stay on well at the end of such a fast-run race. The pool on the Cup was £18,350 10s. Bomber broke, and Lady Scott got clear to come on and beat Milestone by a neck, Pegasus Bay was three lengths away and Manian next. Mistakes put the others out of it. Victoria Handicap Scottish Air and April Direct made most of the running in the Victoria Handicap in front of Star Ace, Battle Colours, and Honestus. Scottish Air and April Direct stopped in the straight, and Star Ace finished fast and won by three lengths from Glenariff, who beat Philario by hail' a length. Battle Colours was three lengths away, with Honestus and Royal Grattan next. Racing past the stand at the end of half a mile Gold Sheik. Ginger Joe. Scottish Lady, Wee Logan, and’ Golden Shadow formed the leading bunch. Once in the straight, Gold Sheik appeared to have the race won, but Scottish Lady beat him on the post. The New Zealand Cup The field for the Trotting Cup was well set at the start, but Ferry Post was slow away. Gold Bar at once set a hot pace, and at the end of half a mile was about seven or eight lengths clear of Peter Smith and Haughty. The leadership was still the same at the end of the next circuit, with Josedale Grattan moving up and the others right out of it. Josedale Grattan commenced to tire just inside the final half-mile. Three furlongs from home Gold Bar was still four lengths clear, hut Haughty and Loyal Rey closed on him inside'the home turn. Haughty finished on well and won by two lengths from Loyal Rey; who was a neck in front of Bayard. Gold Bar was another length away, with Peter Smith and Josedale Grattan well back. The hot pace set by Gold Bar carried most of the field clean off their legs. He went the first mile in 2min 4 3-ssec, 10 furlongs in 2min 35sec, and 12 furlongs in 3min 8 3-sscc. Canterbury Handicap In the Canterbury Handicap Single Star was well placed in fourth place behind Gold Chief, Loyal Friend, and Black Surprise.
