WAR-TIME ECONOMY LABOUR MEMBER’S ADDRESS Mr H. E, Combs. Labour member for Wellington Suburbs, addressed a meeting of the Oamaru branch of the Labour Party on Saturday night, covering a wide range of political problems arising out of war conditions. He made special reference to the efforts made by the Government to control the cost of living, first by stabilising prices of commodities in use 1 in all homes, then by price fixation, and finally by rationing supplies. Complete success by any or all of these methods had not. been achieved, said Mr Combs, but a fair measure of success had. To assist those with heavy domestic needs and small incomes, the Government had turned to the Social Security family benefit, and had given assistance in progressive stages for all dependent children. Cost-of-living additions to wages had also been agreed to. Emphasis had been rightly placed on the family, and he hoped the Government would take one further step and institute a Social Security benefit for wives. Everything that could be done to advance and help family life was of the utmost advantage to the nation. After replying to many questions, Mr Combs was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
