OBITUARY

MR HUGH PATERSON Mr Hugh Paterson, whose death occurred last week at the age of 68 years, was a well-known and highly-respected citizen. He was unmarried, and was a son of Captain Hugh Paterson, who was in the service of the Union Steam Ship Company for many years, and afterwards sailed his own ships. He was a master tailor by occupation. Mr Paterson was associated with the activities of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Piping and Dancing Association from its.inception some 30 years ago, and held office as a vice-president, being made a life member in recognition of his services. He was also a member of the Council of the New Zealand Piping and Dancing Association, and acted as a judge over a long period of years. Mr Paterson was a keen sailing and power boat enthusiast, and the success of the regattas, which were held at Purakanui, were a tribute to his untiring efforts. He was interested in the activities of various Scottish organisations, being one of the original members of the Highland Rifles., He was also one of those who were instrumental in establishing the Highland Regiment in Wellington in the days of volunteering. During his association with the Gaelic Society he held the position of chieftain at one period.
