FATE OF STALINGRAD DECISIVE HOUR AT HAND (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 1. The Germans have intensified their attacks on Stalingrad in the last 24 hours, and have followed up concentrated shelling of the workers’ settlement with ceaseless bombing by the Luftwaffe. The newspaper Red Star emphasises the increasing gravity of the situation, and says that the most decisive moment of the battle is now at hand. The Moscow newspaper Izvestia says that most of Stalingrad’s industries have been evacuated, but the workers are now doing invaluable work repairing tanks and taking part in the fighting. ENEMY SUBMARINES REPORTED IN STRAITS OF GIBRALTAR (Rec. 1.40 a.m.) LONDON. Oct. 1. Two submarines are reported in the Straits of Gibraltar, Destroyers and numerous launches are churning up the straits with depth charges, and seaplanes are patrolling overhead. A convoy of 20 ships is ready to leave Gibraltar, where H.M.S. Malaya and five destroyers are waiting.
