LATE NEWS
GERMANS HELD AT BAY SITUATION AT STALINGRAD EASIER (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 9. The new German frontal assault on Stalingrad from the west is held at bay, and for 12 hours the enemy hasmade no appreciable progress. Savage attacks with heavy forces of tanks and infantry were hurled against the defenders, but at no point was there a break-through. The correspondent of the 8.8. C. suggests that the forcing of the enemy to attack from this new direction is in one sense an encouraging sign, and he emphasises that the Germans have failed to achieve any advance in the Don elbow, where fighting has almost died down. South-west of the city all attempts by the enemy to push forward are firmly held. Under a ceaseless rain of bombs, the Russians have not yielded an inch of ground. The news from the Caucasus is not so good, and fierce battles are being fought around Novorossisk. Even here, however, the German progress is slow. RAID ON FRANKFURT STRONG FORCE OF BOMBERS (Rec. 1.45 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 9. A strong force of R.A.F. bombers was again over the Rhineland last night. The main target was the vital railway junction and inland port of Frankfurt, where large fires were started. Seven bombers are missing as a result of these operations. Fighters of the R.A.F. were also out last night, carrying out sweeps over enemy occupied territory in the Low Countries and France. Three fighters are missing. Planes from Russia were also over eastern Germany last night. CARGO-CARRYIMG PLANES PRODUCTION IN BRITAIN / (Rec. 2 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 9. The Minister of Aircraft Production, Colonel J. J.
