AN UNSUCCESSFUL RUSE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 7. Bryan Charles McCarthy, aged 32, a waterside worker, finding three bottles of rum in a ship's hold, tied one to one leg and two to the other inside his trousers. He used silk stockings for binding. As 'he walked off the ship the bottles clinked and a constable investigated. Defending counsel told the court today that McCarthy found the Dottles loose among some sawdust and succumbed to temptation. He was working while on furlough from military duty. The police said the accused had a very bad record and the magistrate (Mr J. L. Stout) sentenced him to thi ; ee months' imprisonment with hard labour.
