DOUBLE TRAGEDY

WOMAN AND GRANDDAUGHTER FOUND DEAD BESIDE MINERAL SPRING (PA.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 6. A middle-aged woman and her granddaughter were found dead this afternoon alongside the main spring from which the public bath at the Kamo springs mineral spa is filled. The victims were Mrs Teresa Behm, aged about 60, wife of Mr Jacob Behm, of Whangarei, and Irene Day, aged 15, who lived with Mr and Mrs Behm. Mrs Behm and her granddaughter had travelled to Kamo, and were seen by a soldier at 3 p.m. when they were walking towards the' spring, which is also used as a drinking place by those who wish to use mineral water. Later they were found dead by a postal employee. He was leaning over the railing protecting the top of the main spring when he saw the two women lying together in a huddled position on the floor below. They were clear of the spring which bubbles up near the wall. Dr Goodwin, who was one of a large number of visitors to the spa, was summoned immediately, and artificial respiration was attempted, but without success. An inquest will be opened to-morrow.
