YOUNG MUSICIANS AND POETS

Miss Rona Thomson presided over the seventeenth recital of the Music Teachers' Association Students’ Club on Saturday evening, when another interesting programme was presented by members who showed distinct progress in public performance. The interest maintained in these recitals is shown by the fact that on this occasion a record number of students took part in a presentation of works for strings and piano. Piano solos, duos, duets, double duos, songs, trios and violin solos were presented. A special feature was the awarding of the Mona Drtm Prize for original poems. Mr G. W Johnstone, who made the presentation, urged students to study poetry for its beauty of thought and feeling, saying that they would find, in so doing, a deeper and fuller vision of real life from which poetry could not be divorced without loss. Mr W. F. Alexander, who judged the poems,'stated in his report that he had experienced the greatest difficulty in separating the first two poems. Botli sonnets were technically correct, musical and imaginative. The winner was Shirley Palmer, second place going to Tui Rutherford and third to June Lee. He congratulated the students on their efforts. Those taking part in the programme were Misses Ailsa Poulter, Nesta Calton, Thelma Thomson, Jenny Mearns, Shirley Palmer, Rowena Lindon, Edith Turnbull, Lorna Pile Clara Rouse, Ruth Stewart, Olwyn Belcher, Kathleen Allan, Betty Joel, Rosslyn Brown, June Holmes. Brenda Clark, Mgrjorie Holdaway, Jean Nelson, Marion Allan, Olive Nieper, Ellice Nleper, Betty McLean, Mabel Miller and Joan Woods. Messrs William Clarke, William Laing, Louis Rocard. and Walter Metcalfe.
