ITEMS OF INTEREST IN AND ABOUT TOWN Tides.—To-day at Oainaru, high tides will be at 5.49 a.m. and G.ll p.m. Waste Paper Collection.—Residents south ot Torridge street, including the Eden street extension and Chelmer street, and east of Ure street, to the town boundaries, will be called upon to-morrow afternoon for contributions to the waste paper collection. They are asked to have the paper at the gate by 1.15. AMUSEMENTS Majestic Theatre.—The technicolor film. “Down Argentine Way,” will be screened finally to-night To-morrow Spencer Tracy will appear in “ Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.” Opera House.—“ Borrowed Hero ” is a good comedy with plenty of action, while “ Texedo Junction ” is a semi-musical play with Weaver Brothers and Elvira in the main roles. Both will be shown finally to-night.

OAMARU ATHEN/EUM MONTHLY MEETING A letter was received at the monthly meeting of the Oainaru Athenaeum and Mechanics’ Institute on Wednesday night from Messrs W. Dawson and Sons (London), thanking the institution for its expression of sympathy when their premises were wrecked by enemy action last year. The Rev. W. Lawson Marsh (president) was in the chair. Mrs Amies tendered her .resignation as janitress. and the appointment of a successor was referred to a sub-committee. Messrs McDonald and Patterson were appointed the Visiting Committee for the month. The librarian (Miss Ironside) reported that there were 518 adults, 202 intermediates, and 265 juveniles on the roll, making a total of 985 subscribers. New books added to the library this month consisted of 44 fiction, 8 history and travel, and 2 useful arts, totalling 54 books. There were 7572 books issued during the month, including 4139 fiction, 1567 magazines, 1112 juvenile books and fnagazines, 339 jiistory and travel, 172 biography, 83 useful arts. 48 social science, 60 literature, 11 pure scence, 11 fine arts. 7 theology, 2 philosophy, and 1 general. The Book Committee reported that 24 books had been purchased during the month, and recommended the further purchase of 15
