BURNS CLUB

The Burns Club held its 603rd concert in the Town Hall Concert Chamber on Wednesday night. The attendance, owing to wintry conditions, was much smaller than usual. The president. (Mr J. W. Sutherland), accompanied by Mr Arthur Macdonald (vice-president) and the Rev. H. O. Bowman, -were piped on to the stage by Piper J. McVean. Proceedings opened with the National Anthem, played by a military orchestra under the leadership of Mr W. Talt and the direction of Sergeant-major Doig, and the opening ode. " The Star of Robbie Burns.” The president extended a welcome to visitors, and asked Mr Macdonald to carry out the customary introductions. The following programme was presented:—Orchestra, " Tlie Colonial March ” (Gates): song. “Blue Bonnets over the Border,” Mr W. Stevenson; trumpet solo, Mr W. Tail; selection, “ Musical Medley,” the orchestra: songs, Messrs W. Tait and A. Clarke; sailor’s hornpipe, Miss Mavis Biessel; song, “ Glenfinnan,” Mr Arthur Macdonald; Gaelic song. Mrs Angus McLennan; sword dance, Miss Noeline Bush; selection, orchestra; saxophone solo. Mr G. Winch; xylophone and marimba solos. Mr W. Sinton; trumpet duet. Messrs W. Tait and R. Burrows. The accompanist, was Mr Aubrey Clarke. A lecture, was given by Mr Boivman on “ The Highlanders of Waipu.” A vote of thanks to the performers, proposed bv the president, was carried by acclamation. The remainder of the evening was spent, in dancing.
