A RESPECTED OFFICIAL
THE LATE MR J. M. ADAM
TRIBUTES FROM BENCH AND BAR Prior to the opening of the quarterly session of the Supreme Court yesterday his Honor Mr Justice Kennedy and' members of the legal profession in the Otago district joined in paying a tribute to Mr J. M. Adam, registrar of the Supreme Court, whose death occurred on Monday night. "You will have noticed," his Honor said "that the registrar, Mr Adam, whom we have all seen with us for so many years, is no longer in his accustomed place, for he died last night Mr Adam has been registrar here ever since I became resident judge and before that he was registrar at New Plymouth. Hamilton, and Invercargill. I speak for myself and. 1 am sure for the profession, the police, the press, and the public, in regretting the death of a tactful and efficient officer, whose like we shall not soon see again. __ "No one who knew him," his Honor continued, "could fail to pay tribute to the ability, integrity and goodwill with which he discharged the duties of an office which is of great importance in the administration of justice. Those who knew him day by day in the discharge of business feel that by his death they have lost a true friend. We shall all greatly miss him.' Mr G T Baylee, as president of the Otago Law Society, added a tribute on behalf of the legal profession. Mr Adam, he said, had been regarded by members of the profession as a personal friend. His vast fund of legal knowledge and .lore was always at thendisposal. He had been a recognised authority on early Otago literature, and had recently presented two valuable volumes to the Law Society. "We extend our syirroathy to his widow, Mr Baylee concluded, "and I think we can sav' that he died as no doubt he would have wished to die, in the service of his country." "I join you in your expression of sympathy with the widow," his Honor remarked. " and I trust that the knowledge that we share her grief will be of some comfort to her."
