WORKING ON LEAVE

AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS NO RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED (Rec. 1 a.m.) CANBERRA, July 14. The Federal Cabinet has given a ruling that soldiers may ride racehorses or play professional sport on their leave days. Accountants, solicitors, and doctors may also follow their professions while on leave. The Minister of the Army, Mr F. M. Forde, said that so long as a soldier attended training regularly on the days he was expected to be in camp the Government did not propose to dictate to him what he should do on his day of rest. It was far better, the Minister said, for soldiers on leave to engage in healthy sport or other recreation than to hang round the cities with nothing definite to do. A previous message stated that privileged permission granted to certain members of the military forces, such as jockeys, barristers and others, to earn large fees while on leave was to be examined by Mr Forde. It was pointed out that one leading jockey was reputed to have earned between £4OO and £6OO for riding two winners while on leave.
