FRANCE'S FATE
A VASSAL OF GERMANY (Rec. 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 24. " M. Laval's public expression of hope for a German victory is merely further confirmation that he is endeavouring to make France a vassal of Germany in order to gain Herr Hitler's favour," said Mr Cordell Hull to the press. Under M. Laval the French people were expected to surrender all hope for the future. Mr Hull expressed the opinion that the will of the French people, and not of M. Laval, would prevail ultimately. Asked if M. Laval's new declaration altered the position of food shipments to French North Africa, Mr Hull replied: "So far the plans have not been altered." A Vichy message states that the French Expeditionary Force is being transformed into " a tricolour legion " for service anywhere that French interests are involved. The Germancontrolled Paris newspaper Aujourdhui says it will be ready to meet the English on the battlefield.
