SEVERE TREMOR
EARTHQUAKE IN NORTH CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE (P.A.) WELLINGTON. June 24. A severe earthquake rocked the North Island at 11.18 to-night. It was the worst tremor that Wellington has experienced for many years. Much minor damage was done. Windows were smashed, chimneys shaken down, and telephone communications disrupted. No casualties have been reported. The main shock was preceded by a sharp but brief tremor at 8.15.
A report from Palmerston North states that the heaviest earthquake experienced for many years shook the city at 11.15 to-night. Chimneys and power lines are down in places, and considerable damage was done to shops and homes. The duration of the shock is estimated at two minutes. The tremor came with little warning, except for a minor shake earlier in the night at 8.13.
Greymouth reports that an earthquake lasting about half a minute was experienced there at 11.19 p.m. The tremors had a fair amplitude, and the movement was from north to south. FELT IN DUNEDIN A slight earthquake was felt in Dunedin about 11.30 last night. A Mornington resident who communicated with the Daily Times Office reported that he and other members of the family had felt a distinct tremor, that the sides of the house had creaked as it shook. From subsequent inquiries it was learned that a small tremor had been felt by.several other people.
