WAIKOUAITI SCHOOL
DATE OF OPENING A statement that the information given in a caption to a photograph of the present school at Waikouaiti, which was published in the recent annual report of the Otago Education Board, was incorrect, was made by Mr J. A. Valentine, of Taranaki, in a letter to the secretary of the board. Mr Valentine stated that he had been connected with the Waikouaiti School as a pupil and as a teacher. He maintained that the school on the present site was opened in January, 1870, and not in 1873, as was stated in the caption. The site of the former school, he continued, was at the lower end of Beach street, where it was established in 1801. the first teacher being Mr F. Franks, who resigned in 1865 to become the district brewer. In 1869 there was a demand for a larger school, and a building with one room was erected on the present site. Then in 1872 a room was detached from the Beach Street School and added to the new building. Third and fourth rooms were added at a later date.
