HERO OF DUNKIRK
KILLED IN ACTION IN LIBYA (P.A.) WHANGAREI, June 23. 'Squadron Leader Derek Ward, D.S.C. and bar, who has been reported killed during air operations in Libya, is the son of Dr S. H. Ward, of Whangarei. He was the hero of an exploit recorded in the volume of the Fighter Command issued by the Air Ministry. The exploit consisted of flying a disabled plane to England after Dunkirk and fighting off Messerschmitts over the Channei, in spite of lack of petrol and ammunition.
