THEFT FROM SAILOR

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 23. For stealing money from an overseas sailor. Mr J. Morling, S.M., to-day sentenced Frank Barden, aged 32, a labourer, to seven days' imprisonment. The complainant.. Elmes W. Chambers, said that while visiting hotel lounges in company with the accused he became suspicious of Banden, and later noticed him put his hand over the complainant's change and transfer some to his pocket. There was a scuffle in an hotel doorway, and Barden ran away, but was later caught by a constable. The police said that before runnin?; away Barden gave the sailor 10s'in silver and when caught gave the police 7s, remarking, " This is some of the sailor's money, too."
