THE ALEUTIANS
JAPANESE LANDING SECOND ISLAND OCCUPIED (Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 21. The United States Navy Department, according to an agency message from Washington, announced on Sunday that the Japanese have occupied a second island in the Aleutians—Kiska. During the last few days army bombers have damaged Japanese cruisers and sunk an enemy transport at Kiska. An official communique states that operations were restricted by the weather conditions, but during the last few days restricted air operations have been possible, and a small force of Japanese warships in Kiska Harbour was bombed.
VANCOUVER ISLAND
SHELLED BY SUBMARINE (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) OTTAWA, June 21. The Defence Minister (Colonel J. L. Ralston) announced that Vancouver Island had been shelled by a submarine. The shelling was directed against a telegraph station, but there was no damage.
Vancouver Island is a part of British Columbia, Canada, being separated from the mainland of British Columbia by the Strait of Georgia and Queen Charlotte Sound, and from the United States by the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It has an area of 20,000 square miles.
