THE FOOCHOW AREA
SEVERITY OF FIGHTING HEAVY JAPANESE LOSSES (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, June 21. A Chungking communique states that the Japanese have occupied Linshein, 30 miles west of the Peiping-Hankow railway, in northern Honan, and advanced to the north, supported by planes and heavy guns. They suffered' 1200 casualties after hand-to-hand fighting. The Japanese, totalling 10,000, attacked in four columns, forcing the Chinese to evacuate to a line at the foot of the Taiheng-shan mountains. In Hupeh the Chinese raided a number of Japanese garrisons near Tangyang. The Associated Press reports that the severity of the fighting in the Foochow area is indicated by Chinese reports that 20 steam launches moved up the Fu River carrying 3000 Japanese wpunded. The Central News states that Foochow was subjected to two Japanese raids yesterday, the heart of the city being bombed.
