PORTABLE RUNWAYS

EXPERIMENTS IN AMERICA WASHINGTON, June 21. Army and air force officials disclose that, after experimenting, they have tentatively adopted four types of metal ms|h strip-constructed portable runways, which can be used for emergency airfields in combat areas. It is explained that several types are required for the different terrain which can bs expected in the battle zones. Some are designed for fighters and others for bombers up to 25 tons. Test bombing and shelling of the runways have shown that artillery fire is more damaging, due to its tearing effect.
