MAYOR OF INVERCARGILL

MR A. WACHNER ELECTED (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, June 22. By a majority of 1081 votes in a small poll, Mr Abraham Wachner was to-day elected Mayor of Invercargill in succession to Mr J. R. Martin, who resigned because of ill-health. The figures were: A. Wachner 2933, J. Pickard 1852, Only a little over 25 per cent, of the electors voted. Mr Wachner has been Deputy Mayor since the last municipal election in 1941. He went overseas with the Main Body in the last war, and served on Gallipoli, later being invalided home with wounds. He has been a resident and business man in Invercargill for 25 years and a prominent member of the R.S.A. throughout that period. He has been a member of the City Council since 1938.
