ST. KILDA COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council was held last night and was attended by the Mayor (Mr N. D. Anderson) and Crs G. Glue, T. D. B. Roy, J. C. Cherry. E. Longworth, R. S. Brent! W. Rutherford, A. H. Finnie, D. A. Telfer and P. J. B. Rendel. Financial Accounts amounting to £566 14s 3d were passed for payment. The bank balance was stated to be £2904 17s 8d in credit. Domain Board A letter from the Ocean Beach Domain Board stated that the board's statutory levy on the council for the year ended March 31, 1943, was £lOl 10s— The letter was noted. The board notified that its charge for the use of the tip at St. Kilda was on the same basis as last year's contribution, namely, £3OO by the City Council and £IOO by the St. Kilda Council. Air Service Reinstated The Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, writing in reply to a letter from the council, stated that a new air service time table to Dunedin would become operative from July 6. The Mayor: That is very gratifying. It was decided to write and thank Mr Jones for his efforts to have the service reinstated. General It was reported that the charge for water by the City. Corporation for the past fortnight was £169 18s Bd, representing 4,293,000 gallons used. The charge for the previous fortnight was £l7O 2s 7d. The borough inspector reported that he had issued 32 motor drivers' licences for the period ended June 20 and 11 heavy traffic licences. The Rat Nuisance Cr Rutherford said that it had been reported to him that rats were more prevalent in the borough than usual, and that it was recognised that they spread disease. He thought that something should be done at the tip to combat the menace. The Mayor (who is a member of the Domain Board) said the board's advice was that the number of rats in the vicinity of the tip had been definitely reduced. Cr Longworth said they could rest assured that the rat menace was realised by those in charge of military camps, and that they took every precaution to clean them up. "Pill Boxes" Cr Cherry said he thought the City Tramways Department should place larger cars on the St. Kilda service at peak hours than those now being utilised, The speaker described the present-cars as "pill boxes," and-said that they soon became overcrowded. The position was a positive disgrace., It was decided that the Mayor should Interview the transport manager regarding the complaint.
