BANKERS' FIELD DAY

PATRIOTIC APPEAL STUDENTS ASSIST EFFORT Co-operation between bank officials and University students yesterday afternoon resulted in one of the most successful patriotic appeal street days held in Dunedin. At a late hour last night a progress" report showed that there was in hand for the All Purposes Fund a total of £340, but there are further amounts to come in. including the profits from the Dug-out. Given only a few days in which to prepare for the event, the students rallied their forces to present some of those scenes of frivolity which are traditionally associated with the capping procession. Owing to the restricted number of men now attending the University, women students have lately been taking an increasingly active part in the life df the University, and yesterday representatives from all faculties paraded the main thoroughfares collecting on behalf of the combined effort.

Large crowds lined the approaches to the Octagon to give the procession an enthusiastic welcome. AS usual, prominent citizens and current events received their full share of attention at the hands of the students. On the dais an official party, headed by a pseudo-mayor, warmly welcomed to New Zealand the leader of the Free Japanese, "Admiral Hobo," while " General Burley," United States military commander, entertained with s picturesque account of his trip to the Dominion and his opinion of the inhabitant's. Some doubt persisted in the minds of the speakers as to who should be acknowledged as the ruling parliamentary head of the Dominion, but the appearance of the " Prime Minister " himself put all doubts at rest. Concluding the day's programme, a variety concert was held in the evening, when His Majesty's Theatre was packed. Items included a ballet led by Misses W. Slowley, G. Cox, and P. Page, a duo dance by Misses W. Slowley and L. Murdoch, a Maori girls' item led by Mrs R, Parata and Miss M. Ellison, a ballet by University girls led by Miss B. Bishop, a sketch by Messrs D. Storkey and G. Kemble-Welch, and items by Misses C. Rouse, J. Rowley, and Messrs W. Stevenson, R. Wilson-Brown, C. H. Russell, P. H. Oates, " Tommy" Thomson, and A. Sandston.
