THE RUBBER SHORTAGE

ACUTE IN AUSTRALIA SERIOUS EFFECT ON SPORT (Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 17. Because of the restrictions on the use of rubber, football, lawn tennis, golf, and cycling are threatened with extinction for the duration of the war. The position is acnte, and executives of sporting clubs will make representations to the Federal Government. It will be urged that it is necessary to maintain the morale of the public by way of sport, which also plays a big part in national fitness. Unless bladders for footballs are obtainable, footballers in the near future may be compelled to play the game with a case stuffed with rag. The present stocks of golf balls are sufficient to last a season, but afterwards it may be an occasion for reverting to the " featheries " of olden days.
