OLD MAN'S DEATH Sitting as coroner yesterday, Mr H. W. Bundle S.M., concluded the inquest into the death of Peter McLaughlin Alan, aged 62 whose body was found in the water near the fishermen's landing at Port Chalmers on the night of May 23. Detective Sergeant Gibson represented the police. Dr D'Ath gave details of a post-mortem examination of the body, and stated that he had found in the stomach an amount of alcohol sufficient to produce drunkenness in the average individual. The skull was extensively fractured, and in witness's opinion life was extinct before the tide rose sufficiently to immerse the body. Robert Magnus Larkins gave evidence of having found the deceased's body lying in the water at the landing. One leg was wedged in an opening near the edge of the staging. . Rudolf Miller, who saw the deceased in the vicinity of the landing shortly after 6 p.m., said that the latter was then fairly The coroner returned a verdict that death was due to a depressed fracture of the skull, caused when the deceased accidentally fell from the wharf at Port Chalmers on to the staging below.
