UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the council of the Otago University was held yesterday afternoon, and was attended by the chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell) and Messrs S. Rice, W. Downie Stewart, A. Steel, J. Robertson, W. R. Brugh, the Rev. D. C. Herron, Dr R. J. T. Bell, Dr C. E. Hercus, Dr James Fitzgerald, and Miss M. W, May. Mr H. P. Kidson was granted leave of absence for two months. Appointments to Council The following appointments to the council were reported:—The City Council has reappointed the Mayor, Mr A. H. Allen; Miss May and Mr Kidson have been reelected by the Court of Convocation; Mr Robertson (primary teachers), Mr Somerville (school committees), Mr Morrell (teachers in secondary schools). The Waitkai and Otago High School Boards have nominated Mr Brugh to represent the governing bodies of secondary schools, and the Professional Board has nominated Dr Bell. The chancellor said that the voice of the Waitaki and Otago High School Boards would be decisive in the election for their particular representative. Scheme of Education A copy of a resolution urging the immediate institution of a comprehensive scheme of education for those engaged in military service on the lines adopted in Great Britain, Canada, and Australia, was read from Victoria College, and on the motion of the chancellor, it was decided heartily to agree with the resolution. Radiologist Resigns Dr R. M. Barclay wrote stating that she was leaving her position as radiologist at the Dunedin Hospital, this involving relinquishing her lectureship. The chancellor said that this was the first Intimation they had received of the resignation. He thought that the Otago Hospital Board should have notified them of the position. An appointment in Dr Barclay's place had been made by the board. It was decided to thank Dr Barclay for her past services. Matter for Congratulation The secretary of the Medical Research Council wrote expressing appreciation of the work done by the Thyroid. Hydatid, and Nutrition Research Committees. He also stated that the following grants had been recommended for the financial year 1942-43: Thyroid £IBOO, hydatid £SOO, nutrition £ISOO. (The grants in 1941 were: Thyroid £llsO, hydatid £SOO, nutrition £750.) The chancellor stated that in each case the reports from the Research Committee were very cordial. It was gratifying to have the various authorities concerned referring as they had to the valuable research work being conducted by the local committees. The letter was received.
