QUEEN CARNIVAL
«a> OPENING DAY FUNCTIONS Much interest and enthusiasm has been aroused in connection with the programme arranged by the organisers of the All People's All Purposes Queen Carnival for the opening day on Friday'. During the carnival period of nine weeks many bright and entertaining functions will be held. The four carnival queens, who will be introduced to the public on Friday, are: Local Bodies and Building Trades, Miss Mary Grant; Manufacturing Industries, Miss Jean Blackie; Transport, Miss Beverley Brown: Wholesale and Retail. Miss Frances Holmes. At 12.30 p.m. proceedings will begin with a procession of decorated floats, carrying the four queens, the route being from the Railway Station along Stuart street to the Town Hall. This will be followed at 12.40 p.m. by the eagerly-awaited Sulky Stakes, handicaps for which will be announced tomorrow. Well-known citizens, suitably attired in racing colours, will occupy the seats of the sulkies, which will be drawn by local athletes. The drivers will be Messrs A. Bidgood, A. C. Cameron, J. W. Dove, W. G. Kindley. R. S. Glendining, I. K. Mackay, and Dr D. G. McMillan. At 12.50 p.m. the Mosquito Derby will be run, the course, as in the Sulky Stakes, being from Ihe Railway Station to Sprosen's corner. The lady jockeys in this race will be Misses June Mitchell, Joyce McGillan, Susan Fryer, Edna Anderson, Noel Kerr, and Frew. Following this the four queens will be introduced to the public in front of the main entrance to the Town Hall at 1.10 p.m. Art union tickets, priced at 6d each, will be on sale. There are 31 attractive prizes.
