THE EAGLE SQUADRON
• VESSELS ATTACKED MINESWEEPER DAMAGED (Rec. 8.45 p.m.) RUGBY, June 15. Describing operations directed against enemy vessels this afternoon, the Air Ministry says that pilots of the Second Eagle Squadron were engaged in a successful attack on a German armed mine-sweeper off the north coast of Walcheren, an island on the Scheldt, in the south-west of Holland. This vessel was 150 feet long and was approached at such a low altitude that one pilot could see its guns fore and aft. These were silenced, and in spite of heavy fire from shore batteries the Spitfires went in again. This time there were big explosions in the stern of the mine-sweeper. As the fighters flew away the mine-sweeper was listing heavily, throwing out black smoke, and getting lower in the water. In the Nieuport canal two Spitfires from another squadron shot up a barge and attacked gun positions on their way home. The water thrown up by their cannon-shells splashed the windscreens of the low-flying aircraft.
