NEW GOVERNOR OF FIJI
SIR PHILIP MITCHELL (Rec 7.15 p.m.) LONDON, June 15. Major-general Sir Philip E. Mitchell, who.was recently chief political! officer on the staff of the general officer commanding, East Africa, has beer appointed Governor of Fiji and Higi: Commissioner of the Western Pacific, in succession to Sir Harry Luke. General Mitchell was specially .selected in January of last year political officer to General Sir Archibald Wavell. Major-general Sir Philip Mitchell received his first administrative appointment as Assistant Resident in Nyasaland in 1912. and since then has filled a number of other posts in Africa, most of these being in the Tanganyika territory. He was Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Uganda from 1934 to 1940, and deputy chairman oi Conference of East African Governors in 1940. He served in the last war being mentioned in despatches and receiving the Military Cross. Sir Harry Luke was born in London in 1884, and was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Oxford. He entered the Colonial Service in 1908, and has had a varied career. An able and scholarly man, he has written a number of books. In 1938 he succeeded Sir Arthur Richards as Governor of Fiji.
