Vice-Regal The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, was present at a meeting of the War Cabinet yesterday morning. In the afternon his Excellency received Mr A. T. Newboult, Colonial Secretary designate in Fiji, and subsequently he received Mr J. G. Coates, a member of the War Cabinet, and Mr W. Perry, M.L.C.

Captain Max Smith, who has been serving in the Middle East, returned to Dunedin by the express yesterday. Mr F. L. Kitchens, secretary of the Dunedin Manufacturers' Association, returned from Christchurch by the express yesterday. The Presbytery of Dunedin last night expressed its sympathy with the Very Rev. Principal Dickie in his illness.

A Press Association message from Melbourne states that Mr F. R. Picot has presented his credentials to the Australian Prime Minister. Mr J. Curtin.

At its monthly meeting last night, the council of the Chamber of Commerce reappointed Mr J. R. Fairbairn to represent it on the Vocational Guidance Association. The Board of Managers of the King Edward Technical College at its monthly meeting yesterday, reappointed Mr L. Sanderson as its representative on the Dunedin Vocational Guidance Association. ■ Lieutenant Robert H. Odell, United States Army, who has been appointed assistant military attache at the United States Legation, Wellington, has arrived in New Zealand, accompanied by his wife, who is an Australian.

Mr H. H. Meredith, president of the South Island Dairy Association, and Messrs F. J. Harris and A. Johnson, directors, arrived by the express from the north yesterday. They will travel to Invercargill to-day to "attend the annual meeting of the association. Professor Ramsay reported to the meeting of the council of the Otago University yesterday that only one paper had been received for the Macmillan Brown competition in English composition, and that the examiners could not see their way to make an award.

At a meeting of the Otago centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association last night the chairman, Mr C. W. Clark, referred to the death, following a motor accident, of Driver W. Blackwood, a member of the Hanover Baptist Club. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried.
