DEMAND FOR APPLES

SHIPMENT OF BANANAS

AUSTRALIAN NAVEL ORANGES Apples have sold well during the week, and supplies are hardly sufficient for the demand. It is reported by the Marketing Department that supplies of apples from the north are likely to be much lighter in the future, and that the local market ■will have to depend largely on Central Ofago-grown apples. The position is very different from that ruling last year, when a heavy surplus of apples had to be placed in the marts to clear at the best price available. The crap this season is much lighter than was at first expected, and only cool store fruit is now in sight in the North Island. Only a few Delicious and Sturmers are left in Central Otago, apart from the lines which have been placed in cool store, and it appears likely that prices will firm in the near future; A small shipment of Tongan bananas reached the market yesterday—approximately 850 cases. The fruit arrived in fairly good condition, and had to be rationed to retailers. A shipment of Australian navel oranges is eagerly awaited. These will be the first oranges to reach the marts for almost four months. New Zealand and Australian lemons are again in short supply, and there is no word of further shipments. Small lots of Gros Colmaf grapes are still coming forward. Dessert pears have been in short supply, and high prices were ruling at midweek for the small lots coming forward. There were better supplies at the weekend, and it is understood that steady supplies will be on hand from now onwards. Hothouse and outside-grown tomatoes are still offering from Canterbury, and a few local hothouse are also available. Cauliflowers are in shorter supply, with a firmer market. Cabbages continue in heavy supply. Marrows and pumpkins have a good inquiry. Carrots and parsnips are in fair supply, with good prices being obtained. Brussels sprouts are offering in small lots. Choice quality lettuce have a good inquiry, but poor quality are hard to place. Wholesale Prices
