Chiflcy. when appealing in a broadcast for an intensified savings campaign. "This is four times more than peacetime spending, and the burden will grow as the job grows harder," he said. "More men and women are employed and they are generally earning higher wages than ever before. But it is stupid folly to go on spending incomes. Everyone is contributing to the Government by taxation and savings, but it is necessary greatly to increase contributions and reduce the living standard to the barest essentials"
