A NEGOTIATED PEACE
OPPOSED BY REPUBLICANS ISOLATIONISM REPUDIATED (Rec. 1.15 a.m.) NEW YORK, Apl. 19. Mr Wendell Willkie presented a resolution at the Republican National Committee meeting calling for a fourpoint war programme, including opposition to any negotiated peace, full prosecution of the war regardless of the cost in wealth, energy, and human life; the extension of freedom throughout the world, and the assumption of international responsibilities after the war.
Discussing the resolution, Mr Willkie declared that the Republican Party, if it hoped to remain an effective instrument of party government, must not only repudiate completely and absolutely the doctrines of isolationism, but must also with courage and imagination recognise that America after the war must help to lead the peoples of the world to peace and democracy. Senator Robert Taft moved a motion urging Republicans to give unqualified support to President Roosevelt in the prosecution of the war.
