MEN CALLED IN BALLOT
APPEALS TOTAL 45 PER CENT. Appeals affecting 560 reservists called in the ballot of March 25 have been made to the Dunedin Man-power Committee, this number representing slightly over 45 per cent, of the 1232 men from the Dunedin military district included in the ballot. The secretary of the committee (Mr W. J. M. Grant) said yesterday that the majority of the appeals were; made on the grounds of public interest by firms whose employees were engaged on essential work. POSITION AT AUCKLAND NEARLY 50 PER CENT. OF TOTAL (P.A.) ' AUCKLAND, Apl. 20. Nearly 50 per cent, of the Auckland reservists called in the ballot of March 25 (married men of 18 to 28 years with children) have appealed against 1 .military service, said the secretary of the Auckland Man-power Committee' (Mr L. N. Harris) to-day. Auckland's quota was 3093, of whom 1512 had appealed. The majority of the appeals, he said, were made on the grounds of personal hardship or on behalf of reservists on the grounds that they were engaged on essential work. There was a marked decrease in appeals on the grounds of conscientious objection. ,:,. .
